Coming up in 2012

Upcoming changes to the website:

Much better support for mobile devices!

  • There will be full screen views, and the captions, now occupying space at the bottom of the photos, will be overlays that can be switched, or “swiped”, on and off.
  • Support for tablets like the iPad will be much better.
  • For the first time, there will be full support for mobile phones/smartphones.

Matthew Campagna, the man behind The Turning Gate, has done an excellent job (as usual!) in developing the updates and new plug-in modules to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, that have been the basis for this website right from the start.

It will take some time to incorporate all new features, and to to re-do all the pages, but the wait should be worth it!

The preliminary 2012 calendar (expect better, and mobile device compatible pages):

07 April 2012 – The Boat Race, on the River Thames between Putney and Mortlake

02 June 2012 – The Major General’s Review for Trooping the Colour 2012

03 June 2012 – Thames Jubilee Pageant, on the River Thames between Battersea and Tower Bridge

09 June 2012 – The Colonel’s Review 2012 for Trooping the Colour 2012

16 June 2012 - Trooping the Colour 2012

10 November 2012 - The Lord Mayor’s Show 2012

The Lord Mayor’s Show – captions updated, a big “Thank you” to all the helped!

In the last few weeks the captions have been updated several times, based on information kindly provided by companies, organizations, and individuals that answered mails quickly and provided a lot of valuable information.

Outstanding in this respect have been the Guilds of Zurich, where help was quickly and efficiently organized and a wealth of information given – really like the proverbial (Swiss) clockwork. Thanks to the Zurich Guilds!

And another “Thank you” to fellow photographer Fiona Campbell for all her help to fill in missing information! Her photo gallery of The Lord Mayors Show can be found here.

New Facebook- and Twitter page

The website had been rebuilt in a new design, now the Twitter- and Facebook pages have been rebuilt as well.

The Twitter page is only used to announce updates, and for short text messages only, not for photos. So it should be safe to “follow” without being inundated with too much information.

The new Facebook business page will contain photos, with a different intention.

Whilst the photo galleries on the website remain more or less “static” (there will be additions and changes to the captions, but not many changes of photos on existing galleries), the photos on Facebook can and will change much more often.
They are much more meant for “interaction” – for example to find a person in a photo, that just happened to be a visitor at the event, and came into the focus of a long lens, without being an integral part of the event itself.

“Follows” on Twitter, and “Like” on Facebook welcome!

Please subscribe to the newsletter for updates!

New on the website – newsletter functionality, please subscribe!

RSS is very nice, and very useful, but not everyone, including this photographer, uses RSS all the time, or subscribes to all probably relevant RSS feeds. So the “good old” newsletter seems to be a worthwhile alternative!

Based on the excellent PHPList software, newsletter functionality has been added, and a new page with information and links to subscribe, unsubscribe etc.

At the moment there is only one newsletter (it may be split into several lists, covering different subjects, in the future), and you can be sure that you won’t get spammed. Newsletters will only be sent if there is something new worth writing about!

Should you be interested in the technical site of the implementation, you might have a look at this forum entry.

And if you would like to subscribe, please click here!

The Lord Mayor’s Show – done.

Well, for the moment, that is. For the captions I was relying on the official programme and the BBC broadcast, and I’m aware that in the very last part of the photos the captions are possibly not perfect.

If you have better knowledge, can add further information, or help me rectify a caption, please use the contact form and let me know!

There is an area where I have to admit defeat – the City of London police entry, #2 in the programme, would love to know who is who in the photos, but haven’t found the information! Two other issues have already been resolved, thanks to the help from a reader – thank you very much again!

Also – the army gentleman below, and the gentleman in the red uniform – if you can help, please get in contact!

Prints – of course every photo can be ordered as a print, and there are many more photos available.

The Lord Mayor’s Show – update

600 photos done and uploaded on 15 November. That may sound a lot, but it only covers 102 of 150 groups taking part in the show – around five photos per group, not much really!

Not all the photos are up to standard, and the circumstances weren’t perfect, but better to have a photo or two of one group than no photo at all, that was the thought behind the selection process.

Give a dog a home!

The remaining photos should be on the website by tomorrow (Wednesday,  16 November) evening. As soon as the captions are done, the site can be searched, that should make it easier and quicker to find a group of photos!

The Lord Mayor’s Show – work in progress

It has been a great event, with nice, soft light provided by a cloudy sky, at the Lord Mayor’s Show.

Although the position of the press stand opposite Mansion House was not perfect, with the field of view limited by the tube station entrance and traffic lights, and most people on the floats waving towards the opposite side, to the new Mayor of London on the balcony in front of Mansion House, it was, in the end, a good day in terms of photography.

Editing and uploading is, as of now, 14 November 2011, very much “work in progress”, and all the captions will be written after the initial selecting, editing, and uploading of photos has been done, so please come back and have another look here.

Upcoming: The Lord Mayor’s Show

On Saturday, 12 November, I will be shooting the Lord Mayor’s Show in the City of London.

From well before the official start at 11am until around 14:30 I will be at the Mansion House press stand, located on the corner of Poultry and Prince’s Street.

Should you take part in the procession, please let me know and I’ll try to get you “in the frame”!

Lots of photos available in the week following the event on the website.

If you would like to receive updates, please subscribe to the newsletter. The user interface needs a bit more programming, but at least it is working!

Added a “Trooping the Colour” photo gallery for the 2009 parade.

2009 – the very first “Trooping the Colour” parade for this photographer, in fact his first ever parade.

A very exciting experience, despite careful preparation. A bit difficult to follow, especially when viewing the world through a 500mm lens, with action left, right, and centre, so the whole collection of photos came to rest on a computer.

With the experience gained from two further parades, and the knowledge gained in over two years, it was a good time to put a small selection of the photos on the website: Trooping the Colour 2009

Close-up shot of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, from her Birthday Parade in 2009.

If you have taken part in the parade, or have been there as a visitor, it is quite possible that your are in one or more photos, so if you are interested – please get in contact.

All captions done on “Trooping the Colour”-photos

With quite a bit of help (and a big “Thank you” to the ones that patiently answered my questions!) ALL the captions for the “Trooping the Colour” photo galleries have been done.

Should you find a mistake, anything even slightly wrong, including a wrong or misspelled name or rank, or just any spelling/grammar issues (English is only my second language), then please use the contact form (or the reply form below) to send me a quick note, and I’ll correct the caption as soon as I can!

For quite a few photos I would love to have further information, ranks and names, to start with! Should you know more about a person in a photo (or find yourself in a photo), please get in contact.
